The Deceitfulness of Sin Lures to Evil Heart of Unbelief: We Should Beware

DevotionsThe Deceitfulness of Sin Lures to Evil Heart of Unbelief: We Should Beware

Hebrews 3:12-19

12 Take heed, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief, in departing from the living God.

13 But exhort one another daily, while it is called To day; lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin.

14 For we are made partakers of Christ if we hold the beginning of our confidence steadfast unto the end;

15 While it is said, To day if ye will hear his voice, harden not your hearts, as in the provocation.

16 For some, when they had heard, did provoke: howbeit not all that came out of Egypt by Moses.

17 But with whom was he grieved forty years? was it not with them that had sinned, whose carcasses fell in the wilderness?

18 And to whom sware he that they should not enter into his rest, but to them that believed not?

19 So we see that they could not enter in because of unbelief.

📍Two groups of people are described here in connection to sin, the believer in Christ and the unbeliever.

📍 The believer’s gradual movement toward a hardened heart starts innocently, while the unbeliever’s heart is hardened by the deceitfulness of sin.

📍However, It is easy for believers to become preoccupied with things that have little or no spiritual value which also leads to heart-hardening.

👉🏽 Note: it is obvious that once the believer’s focus is diverted from God, it does not take much time for the preoccupation to start and it grows gradually into heart-hardening.

📍This rerouting can become so consuming that the believer ends up ignoring matters of importance in his life.

📍 Be conscious of this: as our spiritual life withers, there is every tendency we give up personal scriptural reflections and Church attendance.

📍No doubt, anyone who spends time with the Lord daily will have a pliable heart. But anyone who brushes the Bible aside gives Satan an opportunity.

📍 The heart which functions without God is deceitful and tilts toward evil.

📍If the mind of a believer is preoccupied with frivolities and trivialities and his heart is distant from God, he is easily carried away by the deceitfulness of sin.

📍 When the sensitivity to the Holy Spirit is dulled in the believer’s life, he starts to drift to Satan’s attractive temptations, he forgets that Satan’s promises are false.

📍He foolishly trusts in the deception and becomes ever more deeply enmeshed in sin because Satan’s apples are full of devastating worms.

📍 This foolish drifting leads to even greater preoccupation with non-spiritual matters and further neglect of one’s spiritual life.

👉🏽Please, note that Christians are not immune to the hardening of the heart. Believers can become as insensitive to God’s voice as unbelievers, but the good news is, that Christians have a way to remove spiritual insensitivity that has been forming within them. Repentance and refocusing on God, lead to devotion, rededication, and worship.

💡So, do not hesitate to check your spiritual life with the mirror of the Bible and the inward prompting of the Holy Spirit. Remember, time is running out.
