Slow to speak and quick to listen

DevotionsSlow to speak and quick to listen

James 1:19

19 My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry.

God gives the grace to patiently listen, understand and seek guidance from the Holy Spirit before responding to a conversation.  Many times we ignorantly enter into the trap of the devil when we try to quickly respond without seeking understanding from the Holy Spirit.

1 Peter 5:8 encourages us to be vigilant because; our adversary the devil, walketh about as a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. Being vigilant also involves proper evaluation of what comes out of your mouth. As powerful as the words of your mouth are in setting captives free, your words can also be used as a snare to bind you down.

You must discern the spirit behind every word before you respond as no word is ordinary. Proverbs 1:5 says “let the wise listen and add to their learning, and let the discerning get guidance”.

When you seek to discern you will definitely get guidance

Prayer:

Lord Jesus help me discern the spirits behind of every word spoken so I will not fall into the trap of the evil one. Amen

Meditation

James 3:3-6

3 When we put bits into the mouths of horses to make them obey us, we can turn the whole animal. 4 Or take ships as an example. Although they are so large and are driven by strong winds, they are steered by a very small rudder wherever the pilot wants to go. 5 Likewise, the tongue is a small part of the body, but it makes great boasts. Consider what a great forest is set on fire by a small spark. 6 The tongue also is a fire, a world of evil among the parts of the body. It corrupts the whole body, sets the whole course of one’s life on fire, and is itself set on fire by hell.
