Jesus: The Only Bridge To God

DevotionsJesus: The Only Bridge To God

John 14:1-6

“Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God[a]; believe also in me. My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am. You know the way to the place where I am going.”

Jesus the Way to the Father

Thomas said to him, “Lord, we don’t know where you are going, so how can we know the way?”

Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.

🔬This passage, especially verse 6, has generated much argument among religionists and so-called philosophers and intellectuals of this world. In that verse, Jesus clearly says, ´I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me.´ A great assertion!

🔬For Twenty Centuries now, people have taken exception to that statement., particularly in this Century (21st Century). Many movements have sprung up to kick against that exclusive assertion made by Jesus Christ. The Movements, such as The Humanists, The New Agers, etc have even advocated for the stoppage of further printing of the Bible and the exclusion of biblical teaching in public schools because, according to them, the problem of humanity is Christianity. They also say that the exclusion of other religions from the journey to heaven is going too far; some go to the extent of saying that Jesus was insane for making such a statement. A great number of philosophers categorically reject His authority to make that claim at all.

🔬However, as Christians who totally believe in the Lordship of Jesus Christ, we must take what He says as truth and nothing but reality. Now, let us think a moment about the word picture of Jesus’ statement in this verse.

🔬How do people picture the words ´the way,´ as Jesus claimed of Himself? Many, no doubts, imagine the type of roads we have today as a one-way street. Like the Existentialists, many take this to mean that there are many roads that lead to salvation and that it is wrong and insanity for Jesus to claim to be the only way to heaven or to the Father. Some of them say that the Bible acknowledged that there are 12 gates in heaven, and as such, one can take any of these gates and end up in heaven. In other words, all religions lead to one destination, heaven. Atheists do not believe at all that there is a heavenly Father, talkless of having a way to Him.

🔬 But, let us have a clear mental picture of what Jesus Christ means by that declaration. He is not thinking of a road as we have it today. He is rather creating a mental picture of a bridge. He is thinking about how sinners who deserved death where they are could cross to the Father where life is. He is creating a mental picture of a bridge to God, the Father. Romans 3:23 says ´For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God and Romans 6 says ‘The wages of sin is death. Leaving that position of sin (death) for the position of life, there must be a bridge to cross. That bridge is Jesus Christ.

🔬 The picture here is of a great chasm between us and God, and we cannot make it across. Unable to bridge the gap, we fall. So, what is the only way across a chasm? A bridge, of course. And that is what Jesus is for us and for humanity. He stands in the gap, providing safe passage across the void and into the loving arms of the Father. The unbelievers, represented by the groups mentioned above are totally ignorant of this fact.

🔬When humanity imagines itself helpless and lost, with heaven just out of reach, beyond a great divide, it can begin to appreciate the true power of the cross, the only bridge to God. This is the ONLY BRIDGE to the salvation of humanity.

❓The question that arises here is, “Have you allowed Jesus to take you across the chasm, by accepting Him as your Lord and Saviour and your divine Bridge to the Father?” If you have not, do remember that you will remain on the other side where sin and death are. Cross over to the other side now where abundant life is.

Shalom and Maranatha!
