Text: 1 Corinthians 9: 27. I discipline my body like an athlete, training it to do what it should. Otherwise, I fear that after preaching to others I myself might be disqualified. NLT.
Signposts are always on the street, on every part of the road, giving directions to a particular address or event.
Signposts show the way but never make it to the event.
Many believers are like the signpost, standing on every street, every highway, maximizing every opportunity to lead lost people back to the love and saving Grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, but still in deep sin and weaknesses.
Of what use is it, to lead a way that you are not in the path?
In a particular city where Christians were been persecuted, a renowned preacher told His congregation, “of what use would it be even when you as a believer die of persecution and still you didn’t make Heaven”?
Paul in his letter from our Anchor text said;
” I discipline my body like an athlete, training it to do what it should. Otherwise, I fear that after preaching to others I myself might be disqualified”.
We must take a daily self-evaluation of our lives, just like an athlete.
Take out time and examine your faith.
As you preach and teach Other, please teach yourself.
You tell others don’t steal, do you steal?
You tell others not to commit adultery, do you commit adultery?
You condemn idolatry, but do you use items stolen from pagan temples? Romans 2:21-22.
Don’t be a bad signpost.
If the same message you preach has refused to prosper you spiritually even when the ones whom you have preached to are prospering, check yourself.
Like an athlete, daily, constantly, build yourself.
A failure to discipline our body can make us a bad signpost as believers.
To be disciplined means to set out strict measures for your path.
We must constantly put the body under subjection to the leadership of the Spirit.
Discipline your body with spiritual activities, pray, fast, study God’s word, live by the standard of God’s word.
Many in the last day would come to present their great work of signs and wonders and the Lord would cast them away.
Matthew 7: 22. Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? 23. And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.
Why? Because they were busy taking out the speck in another man’s eye but never considered the log in their own eye. Matthew 7:3-4.
With fear and trembling, work out your salvation daily. Philippians 2:12.
Examine yourself, take out the log in your own eye, so you would see clearly in helping another. Matthew 7:5.
Never think you are standing everyday, take heed daily and constantly, lest you fall. 1 Corinthians 10:12.
Again I say, Don’t be a signpost that only gives direction, be a real symbol of excellence that would hold men by hand and bring them to Christ in love.
