“Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered, “you are worried and upset about many things, 42 but few things are needed—or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.”
For me choosing is a very difficult thing, especially when there are close alternatives. However, nature forces us to always forego something or several things for one thing. It seems everything comes in pair and one must be chosen, not more than one at a time. For example, it is either white or black, good or bad, yes or no, success or failure etc.
Jesus speaking to Martha identified many incorrect choices people can make. Martha was worried and upset about many things, things she had given more priority over sitting at Jesus’s feet and listening to him. Martha’s choice of preparing a warm welcome for Jesus was not bad, only that there was a better choice she ought to have made. “The choice of listening” was what Mary chose. She might have realized the importance of having Jesus in her house at that time and never wanted to lose any opportunity learning from him.
Mary might have recognized that listening to Jesus instead of being worried and upset about things will produce better results, so she chose to listen. As Christians, our ultimate and only choice at all times should be choosing Jesus, choosing to learn more from Him, for in Jesus you will find solutions to everything. In Jesus, you overcome worry, anger, stress, delays and even failure.
Do you have any challenging situation today? are you struggling or trying to fix something? take a break, be like Mary, go to the masters’ feet, stay quiet and learn.
Prayer: Lord help me in all situation to make the right choice of placing you above my difficulties. Amen
